Christmas Lights: Preventing Electrical Overloads

How to Prevent an Electrical Overload during the Holidays

Blowing a fuse during the holidays can really put a damper on your Christmas celebration. Use the following tips to avoid overloading your circuits with Christmas lights.

1. Use LED lights. LED lights use 20% of the electricity that traditional, incandescent lights use. Making the switch can significantly lower your electric bill over the course of the holidays. Although the initial cost of LED lights is slightly higher, the operating costs are much lower and the lights typically last longer.

2. Don’t leave the lights on. Your light display does not need to be on during the day or during the middle of the night. They need to be on just long enough to make your neighbors jealous. As a result, make sure to unplug your lights before you go to bed. For an even simpler solution, set the lights up on a timer. Then, you'll never have to think about it and there's no chance of forgetting.

3. Replace old lights. Although it may seem like you can get one more year of use out of your old Christmas lights, make sure that you replace any strands that have frayed or exposed wires.

4. Use other decorations. Although it may seem obvious, using fewer lights is a great way to prevent overloading any particular circuit. Consider other types of decorations like garland and wreaths that won't add to the cost of your power bill.

5. Plug lights into power strips. Try to avoid plugging all of your lights directly into electrical outlets. It is important to use power strips that offer surge protection in case of an overload.

6. Spread the love. Don’t plug all of your lights into one outlet or one circuit. Try to distribute the electrical load across several circuits to prevent any one from being overloaded.
